Manic Monday

I’m heading to DC today for a job interview that could be quite promising. It’s with a software development company that pays very well  (they’d have to for me to be able to live in DC) and the benefits are exceptional. They also are very family/work balance oriented and offer flexible schedules so it could be a great fit for Dani and I.

I really don’t want her to lack for anything just because she only has one parent… but I also want to be around for her as much as I can… for the same reason.

And I am just as excited to visit the only big city I love. I’ve spent a lot of time in DC walking, visiting monuments and museums, watching live shows, having picnic lunches beneath the cherry blossom trees in the spring… and it’s been a long time.

I can’t wait to take photos today.

It Doesn’t Always Have to be About Men

I’m really getting quite tired of hearing things like “men get raped too” or “I got beat up on the playground as a little boy” or “men aren’t all like that”…

Seriously guys… it doesn’t always have to be about you.

Yes. All this stuff happens to men too.

Yes… it does.

But here are some statistics for you…

1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of [some form of] physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime.

1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

1 in 7 women and 1 in 18 men have been stalked by an intimate partner during their lifetime to the point in which they felt very fearful or believed that they or someone close to them would be harmed or killed.

1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the United States has been raped in their lifetime.

Almost half of female (46.7%) and male (44.9%) victims of rape in the United States were raped by an acquaintance. Of these, 45.4% of female rape victims and 29% of male rape victims were raped by an intimate partner.

19.3 million women and 5.1 million men in the United States have been stalked in their lifetime.1 60.8% of female stalking victims and 43.5% men reported being stalked by a current or former intimate partner.

So, you can see that, although this stuff happens to men also, it happens A LOT more to women.

AND… when men report crimes against them, they don’t get the following line of questions…

“What did you do to provoke him?”

“What were you wearing?”

“Were you drinking or doing drugs?”

“Have you had sex with him or anyone before?”

“Did you lead him on?”

The fact is, that men are believed when they report a crime… women, not so much. So… go on… tell me again why human beings with penises have the worst time.


30 Day Plank Challenge

So I started the 30 plank challenge 3 days ago, and I’ve already missed a day… :/

It won’t happen again. I set an alarm on my phone to remind me… every day at 10am.

I feel my best when my body is strong. And one of the strongest times in my body’s history was when I was doing planks… in Pilates and Tae Kwon Do. I’m only a yellow belt and it’s been 5 years but I still have the reflexes… I just need to get my strength back.

And planks do it.

Day 2 (the day I missed) and day 3, I could already feel the effects of the 20 second plank I did on day 1. Go ahead, get down in a plank and try to hold it for 20 seconds… remember to put the Mississippis in there to make sure you get the full 20 seconds.

I know, I laughed, too. I used to be able to hold a plank for 2 minutes. No shaking.

20 seconds doesn’t seem like much but it’s longer than you think. And… it’s a start.

I eventually want to get back to my weekly yoga and pilates classes and to start studying Jui Jitsu at the place here in town… check them out online… Southside Jui Jitsu or on Facebook… Southside Jui Jitsu Club.
